While cleaning some things
from my bag, I happen to come across a little folded paper. As I unfolded it I
remembered that it’s a short letter I wrote about the bad customer service my
best friend and I got from a flight attendant when we were on our way to
Singapore. Sadly, this FA is a Filipino. But I really do not look at race or
status in life when it comes to how you treat a fellow human being. For me,
regardless which country or life pyramid you come from what matters is your
character and how you deal with others. Funny, my best friend and I was
contemplating on whether to hand this little letter to the FA because when she
saw my clear showing of contempt against her service, she tried to change her
dealings with me and lightened up a bit. Eventually, I decided not to give it
to her and just hoped that she would change so she won’t get in trouble with a
more dissatisfied customer.
Anyway, this is the short
letter I wrote for her. It was not meant to put her down. I intended it to
touch her and give her a little constructive advice. I have trouble accepting
criticisms as well but I am trying my best to take it as a challenge to better
myself. That was how I wanted her to also take it.
“Dear
Love (her name by the way is Love as shown in her name tag),
I would like to remind you that you’re in the customer service industry. You should serve your customers with a smile, happy that you can serve them well. If you find it difficult to do so then I suggest you find another industry where you don’t have to deal with other people but things, cargo or goods.
I smiled at you when I asked about a drink or that little paper you've been passing around. But you returned me with a blank stare and a disrespectful reply. When you pushed that trolley you budged my chair twice but never bothered to excuse yourself or say sorry.
Without bragging, I am a lawyer and I always make it a point that I treat my clients well, regardless of their status in life. I hope you do as well.
Take this as a constructive criticism and maybe next time you’ll get good compliments instead.”
I am not saying I am
holier than thou but I always give compliments whenever it is due. However, I also
don’t take it lightly when I get disrespected or anyone for that matter. We all
should be extra careful in our interaction with other people. The world is a
harsh place already. We can make a little heaven on earth when we let others
know that no matter how tiny of a speck they are in this humongous universe,
they are respected and given value. God, in his Almighty splendor values each
and every one of His children, who are we not to do the same.
